Activity Overview

Within the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan (ABGMA) Scouts will implement the national BioBlitz program which is an engaging citizen science initiative that brings youth members outdoors to survey and record local plant, animal, and fungi species within a set timeframe. By utilising tools like the iNaturalist platform, Scouts build STEM skills, contribute to real-world conservation, and earn specialised environmental badge.

Scouts with mobile phones are encoured to bring their devices but as per our Code of Conduct mobile phones are only to be used for Scout related activities. In this case it is to record organisim sightings on iNaturalist platform. It would be beneficial if Scouts with phones could download the iNaturalist app in advance but this is not mandatory. 

Within ABGMA we will meet at the pedestrian gates on Mount Annan Drive and walk to the main central area of ABGMA.  If time permits we will undertake a more off the path walk through some of the open spces and remmant bushlands.

Scouts must bring: Roll-on insect repellent and sunscreen, hat, day bag, water bottle 500 mL minimum (no soft drink), lunch, snacks, raincoat, pen & notepad.

If you have a First-Aid Kit  and compass it is desirable to bring these.

If you have a mobile device it will be benecicial to bring this with iNaturalist app.

Activity Information

By utilising tools like the iNaturalist platform, Scouts build STEM skills, contribute to real-world conservation, and earn specialised environmental badge.

Food and Water: Scouts need to bring 500ml water (minimum) and lunch, snacks in a suitable daypack. No soft drinks 

Clothing: Scouts will need to wear uniform shirt with scarf, preferably long pants, sturdy enclosed shoes for trail walking, additional layers they can take on or off if they are feeling cold or warm, plus a hat and raincoat.

Additional Items to bring:

· Compass (if you have one)

· First-Aid Kit (if you have one)

· Roll-on insect repellent and sunscreen

· Pencil and note pad

If you have a mobile device it will be benecicial to bring this with iNaturalist app.
